THE CLOTHIER SISTERS
Holly, Jess and Emma Clothier live on their family farm in Ston Easton. They each have their own jobs to do, which they enjoy, but their biggest passion is their horses. They told us about some of their experiences on the farm, and what they hope the future holds for them.
WEDMORE SHOW
The highlight of the YFC year is the annual livestock show. As young farmers across the north of Somerset prepare for this year's show in April, we look back to how it went last year, when the village of Wedmore came alive with the sound of animals being washed and groomed in the hope of going home with a prize. Among them was Wombat the cow - and her owner, Jack
SAM OSBORNE
Sam Osborne lives on his family farm at Ston Easton in Somerset, which he and his dad are currently in the process of doing up. His other interests include hunting and the history of his home, which he was keen to share with Philipa when she went to visit him recently.
JOE AND ED
Joe and Ed are brothers and live with their parents on a farm in Litton in Somerset. They both enjoy large parts of their farming lives, but have also had some hard times. They told us about some of the things that have made things difficult for them and their family. First they got their dad to tell us about something that happened to him that nearly ended in disaster, and which impacted on all of them.
Farming family
There’s little doubt that having the space and freedom that living on a farm allows, makes for an exciting childhood when you’re young. But what about as you get older? Ben, Matthew and Megan talk about their life on their farm and what it means to them. Why Join YFC?
For a high proportion of young people from farming backgrounds, Young Farmers plays a vital role, ensuring that they have full social lives, as well as helping develop their farm skills. But you don’t have to live or work on a farm to join a Young Farmers Club. Jess is a long term member, and she interviewed a new non farming friend – Alison – about why she recently decided to join.Public Speaking
Taking part in competitions is an important part of being a Young Farmer. But they’re not just about showing how well you can handle your animals. Jane from Wedmore is a keen public speaker and has taken part in several public speaking competitions through Young Farmers. Her friend Freya was keen to find out from Jane about the kinds of things she chooses to speak about .Claire Takes Us on a Tour of her Farm
14 year old Claire Willcox is very proud of her farm and her family, and was keen to show us around her home and share some of the memories and experiences she has of her upbringing on Lower Splott Farm in Mark.
The James Sage Interview
Hannah Dyer interviews James Sage, the County Chairman of Somerset Young Farmers to ask about the importance of Young Farmers, and how some new funding is going to be supporting the local clubs in the future.
Big in Japan
Back in November, Farm Radio became the subject of a documentary being produced by Japanese TV company NHK.. The team visited several farms in Dorset to film and record stories about farming life in the county, and their final visit was to an organic farm near Blandford. 15 year old Richard lives on the farm, and once they’d filmed him and his family, he turned the tables – and the microphone – towards them, to find out what they’d been doing over the past week, and their views on what they’d seen.
Richard and Ben Willcox
Twenty years ago, if your father was a farmer and you wanted to follow in his footsteps, you could pretty much guarantee to take over a financially viable farm. Richard Wilcox has farmed for most of his life and would like nothing more than to hand a thriving business onto his son Ben, but the future of Lower Splott Farm in Mark, is anything but secure.
Parent Worries
It’s natural to try and protect your children from your worries, but because farming is a way of life rather than just a job, it’s impossible to hide concerns from the kids. Friends Fay, Olly and Claire all live on farms in the Wedmore area, and they talked about the fears they have for their parents as they struggle with the problems and challenges of 21st century farming.
Jack and Wombat
Jack has a special relationship with Wombat, a calf that he is training and preparing for showing.
